What is Face Value?

Face Value is a social initiative that challenges how Black skin is photographed. Currently, the “rules” around portraying Black individuals are steeped deeply in racial bias. Led by BIPOC OCAD alumni in the creative industry, we are rewriting these biased rules by creating a new standard of representation for photographers backed by data and community input.

How it works

We’re looking to work with graduating Black OCAD students to understand how the next generation of Black creatives wants to see themselves portrayed. We’ll provide you with a complimentary headshot session courtesy of our photographer, OCAD Alumni - Mark Gallardo. In return, we’d love to learn more about you and your creative ambitions, career goals, and future dreams. We’ll also be filming a short video featuring you and your peers as you share your thoughts with us. Your participation will help support our research in creating a comprehensive guide that sets a new standard for photographing Black skin inclusively and authentically.

When and where do I get my headshot?

Headshot sessions will take place on Thursday, February 26, 2026, in the Queen & Palmerston area of Toronto. Full details will be confirmed via email once your photo session is booked with the photographer.

How long is each session?

Each headshot session will take approximately 1 to 1.5 hours. We will have slots available from 8:30 to 6:30 pm. Before the session day, we’ll meet with you virtually to get to know you better and understand how you would like to be portrayed.

Is it free?

Yes! Our headshots are completely free to selected graduating Black OCAD students.

Who is this iniative from?

Face Value is a joint initiative by Black Canvas, Alfredo Films, and OCADU in partnership with the Foundation for Black Communities, sponsored by the Government of Canada.
